A large male leopard found its way to a school in India, mauling six people during his rampage. The attack lasted for ten hours which eventually ended as the leopard was safely tranquilized by a vet staff.
The incident happened in the Vibgyor International school in Kundalahalli in Bangalore City. Sanjay Gubbi, a wildlife expert was one of the six people who was attacked by the said animal.
A video was able to capture the incident showing Gubbi desperately fighting off the big cat using his binoculars near the school’s swimming pool.
As CCTV footage was reviewed, it was believed that the leopard walked onto the school’s premises early morning. The beast seemed frantic as it ran through the school, attacking anyone who got in the way.
The male leopard was estimated to be eight years old. The Indian leopard is vastly distributed on the Indian Subcontinent. Although, a significant amount still survives at present time, its population has since declined due to habitat loss, fragmentation, poaching and persecution due to conflict with humans.
Leopards usually approach human settlements due to easy access to food like dogs and livestock, thus, they are considered unwanted trespassers by villagers. The India’s Forest Department could only set up traps for the said animal only if they attack humans.
