A twenty-two second video clip uploaded on Facebook shows a high school student using the Filipino flag as a mop. The video was seemed to be taken inside a classroom, while the person taking the video was heard chuckling over the said act.
This video, which has gained attention from netizens, has sparked anger over fellow Filipinos.
The video was captioned with the information of the Republic Act No. 8491, known as the “Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines.” Section 2 of the said Republic Act states that, “Reverence and respect shall at all times be accorded the flag, the anthem and other national symbols which embody the national ideals and traditions and which express the principles of sovereignty and national solidarity.”

Furthermore, RA No. 8491 Section 34, prohibits the mutilation, defacement, defilement, trampling on or casting contempt any act or omission casting dishonor and ridicule upon the flag over its surface. Section 50 elaborates the punishment for the said offense which is a fine of not less than 5,000 Pesos, but not more than 20,000, or by imprisonment for not more than one year, or both such fine and imprisonment, at the discretion of the court.
